Updates for 8/21/06
Weight: 8 lbs 10 oz (and holding)
06:10 am - Morning all. It's been a very long month or so ... every so often I keep reminding myself to update the blog, but there just never seems to be any free time. I would like again to thank everyone for the words of support and the gifts of kindness. We received two gas "gift cards" from my office ... not sure "who" they are from (although I have my suspicions) ... but regardless, we're certainly thankful. Also very thankful for the friends and family who have brought food over and who've come by to help with the boys. Momma's mom and sister frequently come up during the days and my parents in the evenings and then there's the periodic visits of other family members and friends ... all a welcome blessing.
Ok, now for the recap
The checkup at the Children's hospital went well. It was determined Gavin did not have a hernia, but he does have a weak diaphragm ... as long as this doesn't appear to cause him any problems, they were ok with leaving it as is. We weren't able to make the trip to the funeral as we had hoped to do, it would have been a challenge to do so.
Until recently, the fussiness seemed to be under control. Nathan is doing much better and other than him fighting going to sleep (spoiled?) he's been a rather easy going baby. Gavin fussed usually when he's hungry or tired and it was pretty easy to tell what was wrong. We had been increasing his milk intake and he seemed well enough. Both boys have been doing the typical baby thing equally (cooing, grabbing for items, moving their head around, etc) .
And then ... a few weeks ago, things changed. Isaac got a cold and as he was getting over it, Marcus caught it too (expected, since they share the same room). It was a mild thing, some runny noses and coughing and they both got over it within a few days. Of course, if either of the babies were to catch this, it might not be so good (especially Gavin). So, we took extra care to keep the older boys away from the twins and made sure hands were washed constantly.
By the end of that week, the colds had cleared up and all seemed normal. Neither baby seemed to have caught any of the illness ... we had even had a visit to the pediatric clinic and things seemed to be progressing well for the boys. That following day though, Gavin started eating less and less from his bottle and sometimes would refuse it all together. Thinking that this was just some phase, we simply continued for a few days, keeping track of his weight. During this week, we also noticed Gavin would fuss (fussing could range from mild fit throwing to all out wailing) when we even try to feed him. Oddly enough, even though we had a clear pattern of him not eating as much for the week, he still seemed to be gaining weight.
After a few days of this, we took him again to see the pediatric doctor. After looking him over, he gave him a clean bill of health. He did suspect that maybe Gavin outgrew his Zantac dosage (helps control acid-reflux) and that some of the symptoms may be attributed to that ... so we left with the instructions to simply increase that dosage.
After two days with the increased dosage, there didn't seem to be any positive results (in fact, he seemed to be eating less still). We tried numerous things including changing the nipples on his bottle, varying the temperature of the milk, changing the times and positions of his feedings, etc ... but no silver bullet. Oddly, he did nurse one day from momma directly (even when he refused the bottle) ... but he hasn't done that since. Added to this mystery, Gavin has been having gas pains and sometimes it takes almost an hour to get him to burp it up (and he's wailing most of this time unfortunately ... or he tires himself out and falls asleep, in which case we start again when he wakes back up).
So, after these two days (I guess that would have been Friday) we made another visit to see the doctor at the pediatric clinic. Again, all checked out ok ... he suggested trying some Mylanta to give him right before he feeds. He suspected that maybe the Zantac wasn't being effective enough and this may help diagnose that. So, that takes us to this weekend and unfortunately, no sign of progress (yet).
